David Harewood is a British actor, director and author whose career extends from Shakespearean theatre to contemporary espionage and superhero television. Viewers may recognize him as David Estes in Homeland, Captain Poison in Blood Diamond or J'onn J'onzz in Supergirl. Those screen roles sit alongside a substantial stage background and public work on representation in the arts. His career offers several different versions of authority: an intelligence official, a threatening figure in a war-zone drama and a protective alien whose outward identity conceals a much longer personal history.
Harewood graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1987. RADA records that he became the National Theatre's first Black Othello in 1997, an important distinction tied to that institution rather than a claim about all productions of the play. The academy also identifies his MBE in 2012 and OBE in the 2023 New Year Honours for drama and charity. These milestones provide a wider frame for a career sometimes encountered first through American television: the screen work grew from a long engagement with British performance and public life.
Homeland cast Harewood as David Estes within the intelligence-service world surrounding Carrie Mathison and the returning Marine Nicholas Brody. Channel 4's cast record places him alongside Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin. An institutional role carries particular dramatic responsibilities: the character helps define what information is accepted, who is trusted and how decisions move through a hierarchy. That is a different kind of screen presence from Captain Poison in Blood Diamond, a film role also highlighted by RADA. The contrast shows why a career introduction should look beyond the broad label of a commanding performance.
Supergirl initially presents Harewood through the identity of Hank Henshaw, the stern head of the organization working with Kara and Alex. The series then reveals that this figure is J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter. In a 2015 interview with DC, Harewood discussed how learning that secret changed his understanding of the role. The hidden alien identity introduced loneliness and concealment beneath the official exterior. This is the television series starring Melissa Benoist, not a role in the later Supergirl feature film. Harewood also moved into directing during his work on the series.
The Night Manager supplied another espionage setting, with Harewood playing Joel Steadman in the 2016 adaptation of John le Carre's novel. The BBC press pack identifies the role and places it within the ensemble led by Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman. It makes a useful comparison with Homeland because both productions depend on networks of trust, but they organize their stories around different institutions and central relationships. Watching the supporting players closely helps reveal how a thriller establishes the systems through which its principal characters must operate.
Beyond fiction, Harewood has presented documentary work including David Harewood: Psychosis and Me and has written Maybe I Don't Belong Here. The memoir examines race, identity and recovery through his own account, rather than offering a fictional character study. Pan Macmillan's description places his Birmingham upbringing and later acting career within that personal narrative. RADA also announced him as its President alongside Cynthia Erivo as Vice President, describing roles that support students, faculty and the wider academy. This work connects an established performer's experience with questions about who gets to enter and thrive in the profession.
The two gallery photographs show separate public appearances: a Supergirl panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017 and the BAFTA television awards in 2026. They document Harewood himself and should not be mistaken for images of Estes or Martian Manhunter. A viewing route through Homeland, The Night Manager and Supergirl can trace how his presence changes with each production's rules. His theatre background, documentary work and writing add another perspective, showing a career that includes both inhabiting fictional roles and speaking publicly in his own voice.
A convention panel and an awards appearance show David Harewood at two distinct stages of his television career.
