David Costabile is an American actor whose television roles include Gale Boetticher in Breaking Bad, Daniel Hardman in Suits and Mike 'Wags' Wagner in Billions. His career also includes substantial stage work and appearances in feature films. These familiar television characters are notably different from one another, making comparison across the series a useful introduction. Rather than treating him only as a recognizable face in an ensemble, a closer viewing can follow the particular choices and relationships that distinguish each role.
Costabile trained in New York University's graduate acting program. His Broadway record includes The Tempest, Titanic, Caroline, or Change and Translations. In the latter two productions he played Stuart Gellman and Manus respectively. Those stage credits establish a parallel history alongside the television work for which many viewers recognize him. They also include both plays and musicals, giving context to a performer whose screen appearances can involve dramatic dialogue, comedy and musical moments within otherwise very different kinds of story.
Television assignments included the newspaper editor Thomas Klebanow in The Wire, Rick Messer in Damages and Daniel Hardman in Suits. Costabile also appeared in Flight of the Conchords. These parts place him within distinct professional and social worlds. A selective viewing route can compare the newsroom, the legal drama and the comedy ensemble, paying attention to how a supporting character changes the atmosphere of a scene. The roles remain individual creations rather than interchangeable examples of a single character type.
Breaking Bad cast Costabile as chemist Gale Boetticher, a character whose involvement in Walter White's world became consequential despite a relatively limited number of appearances. He later returned as Gale in Better Call Saul. AMC's coverage of that return also notes the character's musical performance. Watching the appearances within their respective series preserves the larger narrative context. It is a particularly clear example of an actor returning to the same fictional person in a different part of a connected television story.
Billions gave Costabile the longer-running role of Mike Wagner, usually called Wags, associated with Damian Lewis's Bobby Axelrod. The character offers a strong contrast with Gale in manner and professional setting. Costabile discussed that range in a 2019 interview with The Ringer, where he described a career shaped by individual opportunities and interests rather than a simple planned progression. The performances themselves provide the best comparison: the quieter chemist and the forceful financial-world figure function differently within their respective ensembles.
In Waco: The Aftermath, Costabile played Judge Smith. The 2023 limited series examined events following the Branch Davidian standoff, with Drew and John Erick Dowdle directing its five episodes. In a Television Academy interview, Costabile discussed researching the historical figure while recognizing the difference between a dramatization and a documentary. The role adds a historical legal setting to his screen work. It can be considered alongside his stage credits as another example of preparing a specific character within an ensemble-led production.
An introduction to Costabile can combine Breaking Bad, Suits and Billions, then add Waco: The Aftermath or the Broadway production record. The gallery contains two distinct photographs from the 2014 Comic-Con presentation for Dig: a solo event portrait and a group photograph. Costabile stands second from the right in the group. Keeping the wider image preserves the shared appearance and its context. Both photographs are public-event records, credited individually, and are not described as scenes from the fictional productions discussed in the biography.
