Intro

Danny Pino is an American actor whose television career has repeatedly crossed the line separating investigators from the people they pursue. Viewers of Cold Case know him as Detective Scotty Valens; Law & Order: Special Victims Unit audiences know Detective Nick Amaro; Mayans M.C. places him on the opposite side of the law as Miguel Galindo. Those roles share an interest in authority, but their dramatic positions differ. Pino's wider record includes theatre, films and directing, giving useful context to the long-running television characters with which he is most closely associated.

Career snapshot

His professional preparation included a B.F.A. at Florida International University and an M.F.A. in NYU Tisch's Graduate Acting Program. FIU identifies him as a 1996 alumnus, while Tisch places him in its class of 2000. In FIU's account, Pino credits the university's theatre teachers and his fellow students with providing a lasting foundation. His subsequent returns to campus included speaking with students and serving as homecoming grand marshal. These connections preserve the educational part of his story alongside the more visible record of screen appearances.

The entry point

Pino's theatre work includes Measure for Measure with the Public Theater, directed by Mary Zimmerman, and the West End production of Up for Grabs at Wyndham's Theatre, directed by Laurence Boswell. In 2019 he played Frank McCloud in Key Largo at the Geffen Playhouse. The theatre's biography also lists film appearances in Andy Garcia's The Lost City, Michael Mayer's Flicka and Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain. Together these credits show that his working life has not been confined to returning television ensembles or to one kind of crime story.

Screen identity and style

Cold Case's Scotty Valens and SVU's Nick Amaro gave Pino sustained opportunities to develop police characters. Amaro joined the SVU team in the show's thirteenth season, and Pino left at the end of season sixteen. He returned for the five-hundredth episode in 2021. In that story Amaro is no longer an NYPD detective: his work with forensic science and genetic evidence brings him back to Olivia Benson's team to revisit a conviction. The return therefore acknowledges the earlier character while allowing his life and professional interests to have changed.

Collaborations and patterns

Discussing that return with Entertainment Tonight, Pino described both the comfort of working again with familiar colleagues and his interest in how the programme's visual approach had evolved. The appearance was more substantial than a passing reunion. It let a former regular take part in a new case, and it connected the character's past difficulties with a different direction in his work. For viewers following Pino rather than only one series, the episode offers a useful comparison with the more unsettled world he inhabited on Mayans M.C.

Era reflection

Miguel Galindo is a cartel leader, not another detective. Tisch's 2019 profile highlights the combination of vulnerability, charm and menace sought for the role. FX also credits Pino as a director on Mayans M.C.; its final-season episode guide names him as director of Do You Hear the Rain. The actor's involvement thus extended beyond the person seen on screen. In the 2024 series Hotel Cocaine he played Roman Compte, the manager of Miami's Mutiny Hotel in a fictionalized story set amid the city's late-1970s drug trade.

Legacy and rediscovery

The two photographs here mark different parts of that television career. Shannon's July 2011 photograph shows Pino during a break from SVU filming in New York. Gage Skidmore's July 2018 photograph records a San Diego Comic-Con appearance associated with Mayans M.C. They are separate photographs from separate occasions, rather than alternate crops presented as different roles. Read alongside his stage and film credits, they offer a compact route through a career built on continuing characters, ensemble relationships and movement between performing and directing.
