Colleen O'Shaughnessey is an American voice actress whose work spans television animation, English-language anime adaptations, games and feature films. Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has introduced her to a large movie audience, while other viewers recognize her as Sora in Digimon or Jazz Fenton in Danny Phantom. Her career illustrates a form of acting in which the performer may remain visually unfamiliar even when the character's sound is immediately recognizable. The voice supplies personality, intention and emotional continuity across very different animated worlds.
On her official website, O'Shaughnessey recalls inventing voices for animals and babies as a child and enjoying cartoons, Disney programs and The Muppet Show. A college instructor suggested voice-over as a profession. She moved to Los Angeles, studied, assembled a demonstration recording and sought representation and auditions. Her early paid work included Skipper in a Reporter Barbie book, followed by Polly in The Kids from Room 402. Those beginnings involved persistence and training rather than an immediate leap into a famous franchise.
Tails is a two-tailed fox and one of Sonic's closest companions. O'Shaughnessey voiced him in Sonic Boom and other franchise productions before carrying the character into the feature-film series. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gives Tails a major part in the adventure, with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic and Idris Elba voicing Knuckles. She returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 2024, as confirmed by Paramount's cast record. The studio's Knuckles production notes also credit her return as Tails in that television extension of the film world.
Her earlier work as Sora Takenouchi in Digimon required the particular discipline of dubbing existing animation. In an interview with Chris McFeely, she discussed learning to fit dialogue into the available timing and mouth movements while keeping the scene's emotion intact. She described Sora as close to her own voice, adjusted upward, and approached an older version through attitude as well as pitch. These details show how character development can involve subtle choices rather than a conspicuously unusual sound or a single vocal trick.
Danny Phantom offered another continuing character in Jazz Fenton, the title hero's older sister. O'Shaughnessey has spoken appreciatively of Jazz's sarcasm and attitude. Her other credits include Wasp in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, along with roles in Naruto and Bleach. These are separate characters and production traditions, with original American animation and English-language adaptations making different demands. A voice actor's contribution is best understood through the specific performance and version, rather than assuming that one actor supplies a character in every language or adaptation.
Improvisational performance also formed part of her experience. In the McFeely interview she described working with The Empty Stage and Social Extortion, and connected improvisation with the ability to respond freely in the recording booth. Her official account emphasizes the pleasure of developing characters and continuing to learn through auditions. That combination of preparation and flexibility is a useful way to approach her work: a character must remain consistent enough to be recognizable while still reacting naturally to new dialogue, relationships and situations.
A retrospective can compare Tails's enthusiasm with Jazz's older-sister manner and Sora's place in the Digimon ensemble. The differences reveal the actor's choices more clearly than a list of franchise names alone. The gallery shows O'Shaughnessey at three separately documented events in 2022, 2023 and 2024. These photographs introduce the performer behind the voices and preserve their convention context. They are not presented as production stills, and the character credits remain separate from the photographers' records of her public appearances.
Three distinct convention photographs show the performer behind a range of familiar animated voices.
