Cleavant Derricks is an American actor, singer and composer known for originating James Thunder Early in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls and for playing Rembrandt Brown in Sliders. His work connects musical theater with television comedy, science fiction and feature films. The stage role brought him a Tony Award, while Sliders introduced him to viewers as a singer unexpectedly caught in a journey through parallel worlds. Those two parts share a musical element but belong to very different kinds of storytelling, showing how his performance background could serve both a Broadway ensemble and a continuing television adventure.
Derricks came from a musical family in Tennessee and began writing gospel music before establishing his acting career. His father, also named Cleavant Derricks, was a minister and gospel composer; the actor and his father are separate people. His twin brother, Clinton Derricks-Carroll, is also a performer and should likewise be distinguished from him. His official biography describes work with Vinette Carroll and the Urban Arts Theatre in New York. Singing, composing and performing were therefore connected parts of his development, rather than separate careers that began only after his television work.
Dreamgirls opened on Broadway in 1981, with Derricks creating James Thunder Early in Michael Bennett's production. He also contributed vocal arrangements. His performance earned the 1982 Tony for featured actor in a musical and a Drama Desk Award. In a later Broadway.com interview, he recalled that an encounter with Loretta Devine led him to the workshop that became Dreamgirls. The production's story of performers, ambition and the music business gave him a role rooted in showmanship, while the arrangements connected his musical skills to the sound of the larger company.
Other Broadway work included Your Arms Too Short to Box with God, But Never Jam Today and Hair. Bob Fosse's Big Deal cast him as Charley and brought another Tony nomination in 1986. He later played the Street Singer in Brooklyn. These credits place Derricks in several distinct musical-theater traditions rather than tying his stage identity to a single success. The Internet Broadway Database records both performance and arranging work, preserving the distinction between the roles audiences saw and the musical contributions made within the productions.
Sliders began in 1995 with Derricks as Rembrandt Brown, nicknamed the Crying Man. The studio's season-three press biography describes him as a singer from the Spinning Tops who is accidentally swept into the first slide while traveling to a performance. Unlike the characters who understand or create the experiment, Rembrandt initially enters the adventure without choosing it. Derricks remained with the series throughout its five-season run, alongside an evolving cast. The part used his musical background while also placing him in stories of danger, displacement and the effort to find a way home.
His film credits include Moscow on the Hudson, The Slugger's Wife and Off Beat. Television work outside Sliders includes Drexell's Class, Good Sports, Woops! and Thea, as well as guest appearances in a range of dramatic and comic series. He later played the Wizard in Wicked on tour and on Broadway, returning to a major musical-theater setting. In his 2022 Broadway.com conversation, he described the pleasure of being back on stage. That return forms part of a continuing theatrical career alongside the screen role for which science-fiction audiences often recognize him.
The two photographs here were made by different photographers on separate days at GalaxyCon St. Louis in October 2025: one records a panel appearance and the other a posed photo opportunity. They are distinct source photographs, not alternate crops of one image. For further exploration, Dreamgirls' original cast recording offers his musical work, while Sliders provides the sustained character journey of Rembrandt Brown. The Broadway credits reveal additional facets of a career in which singing, acting and musical arrangement have repeatedly informed one another.
