Intro

Cheryl Ladd is an American actor and singer whose work spans television drama, musical performance and Broadway. Born Cheryl Jean Stoppelmoor in Huron, South Dakota, on July 12, 1951, she became widely known as Kris Munroe in Charlie's Angels. Her career also includes animation singing, variety television and later character roles. This guide follows those different forms of performance, with photographs that distinguish early television publicity from a later public appearance.

Career snapshot

Hallmark's biography describes her move from South Dakota to Los Angeles and an early professional break as the singing voice of Melody in Josie and the Pussycats. Singing voice is the important distinction: it is not a claim that she supplied all of the character's dialogue. The same biography lists The Ken Berry WOW Show, with Steve Martin and Teri Garr, among her early credits. Music and comedy were therefore part of her working life before her best-known dramatic series.

The entry point

Ladd joined Charlie's Angels in its second season, playing Kris Munroe. The Paley Center's anniversary announcement preserves a joint cast statement recalling that transition and the attention surrounding the series. For a rewatch, follow how Kris establishes a place within an already familiar team. Notice the exchanges among the investigators rather than looking only at individual action moments. The 1977 publicity photograph below includes Ladd with Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson; it documents that cast configuration, not the series' original first-season lineup.

Screen identity and style

Her musical work later reached Broadway. IBDB records Ladd as a replacement Annie Oakley in the revival of Annie Get Your Gun, beginning September 6, 2000 and continuing into January 2001. The revival opened in 1999, before she joined it. That distinction helps separate the history of the production from the dates of her own performance. The stage credit offers a useful counterpoint to Kris: a leading musical role places singing, movement and sustained live performance together.

Collaborations and patterns

Variety television provides another route through the career. The Paley Archive lists Ladd in the August 18, 1979 premiere of Carol Burnett and Company, alongside Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway, Craig Richard Nelson and Kenneth Mars. Its catalogue identifies the programme as comedy and variety. This is a credit-based viewing suggestion, not a claim to have inspected every sketch in the archive. Exploring a variety appearance beside a continuing dramatic role can reveal the different pacing and ensemble demands of each format.

Era reflection

Later roles continued to combine acting and music. Disney's 2022 biography describes Ladd as Erin in A Cowgirl's Song, a former country performer dealing with loss, in a cast that also includes Darci Lynne and Savannah Lee May. It also credits her as Linell Shapiro in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, opposite John Travolta as Robert Shapiro. Those characters belong to different kinds of storytelling. Compare the musical film's family relationships with the restrained exchanges required by a drama about a widely documented event.

Legacy and rediscovery

A useful rediscovery path moves from Kris Munroe to a variety credit, then to the Broadway record and later screen roles. Hallmark also credits Ladd as Abigail in Royal New Year's Eve and notes her work with Childhelp. The photographs here provide three points of reference: a Happy Days publicity image with Ron Howard, the Charlie's Angels ensemble, and a 2001 public appearance. They are dated and credited separately so that a promotional photograph is not mistaken for a recent portrait or an image of a different production.

Selected roles

  • Charlie's Angels: Kris Munroe — Joined in the second season
  • Josie and the Pussycats: Melody, singing voice — Early television work
  • Annie Get Your Gun: Annie Oakley — Broadway replacement, September 2000 to January 2001
  • A Cowgirl's Song: Erin — 2022 film
  • Royal New Year's Eve: Abigail — Hallmark film

Rewatch notes

  • Compare the team dialogue in Charlie's Angels with a musical or variety credit.
  • Ladd joined the Broadway Annie Get Your Gun revival in 2000, after its 1999 opening.
  • The Melody credit concerns singing; distinguish that contribution from spoken voice acting.
