Cathy Cahlin Ryan is an American actress whose television work includes two very different positions within police dramas: Corrine Mackey in The Shield and Dr. Wendy Hughes in S.W.A.T. In the first, she played a member of the family living with the consequences of a detective's actions; in the second, she appeared as a professional involved in the lives of another police ensemble. Her career also includes stage work, guest appearances and feature films. The photographs in this gallery document her attendance at the Peabody ceremony honoring The Shield, a program award shared by its creative team.
Ryan grew up in Miami and became interested in acting while attending high school. She studied theatre at Florida Atlantic University and worked with South Florida theatre companies before moving to Los Angeles in 1993. Her early experience also included commercial work. In Los Angeles she combined substitute teaching with stage performances while seeking screen opportunities. That background places her later recurring television roles within a longer working life in performance: the breakthrough on The Shield followed years of training, theatre and smaller jobs rather than representing her first encounter with acting.
The Shield began in 2002 and continued through 2008. Ryan's Corrine Mackey is linked to Michael Chiklis's Vic Mackey through their marriage and family, and the series follows the pressures that Vic's choices bring into their home. The Television Academy's program history identifies her among the cast and distinguishes her regular status in the later seasons. Corrine's perspective gives the police story a domestic dimension. Rather than participating in the detectives' work on their terms, she must respond to its effects on people whose security depends on decisions made elsewhere. Ryan appeared across the show's seven-season run.
The Peabody citation for The Shield specifically recognizes the importance of Corrine to the show's emotional world. The award honored the program's 2005 work; its presentation took place at the 65th annual ceremony on June 5, 2006, at New York's Waldorf-Astoria. Those are different dates in the same award cycle. The gallery's wider photograph shows creator Shawn Ryan at the lectern with cast members, while the portrait shows Cathy Cahlin Ryan at that event. These photographs record a collective professional celebration, not an individual acting award. The Peabody account situates the family story alongside the drama's police and institutional conflicts.
Her other television appearances demonstrate a career extending beyond Corrine. TV Insider records work on Judging Amy, Monk, Numb3rs, The Unit and Lie to Me, including Gloria Morales on Monk and Beth Lansford on Lie to Me. These parts belong to different fictional settings and should not be read as continuations of The Shield. An earlier screen credit was the 1994 television production Roseanne: An Unauthorized Biography. Across guest appearances and continuing roles, Ryan has worked within a range of television ensembles, building a filmography that combines brief character assignments with the sustained development possible in a recurring part.
In David Mamet's 2008 feature Redbelt, Ryan played Gini Collins. The film's cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mike Terry and Max Martini as Joe Collins, with Mamet credited as both writer and director. This is a separate dramatic setting from her television police roles and illustrates the feature-film side of her work. Her later film credits include The Trials of Cate McCall, in which she appears as Ms. Timmins. These supporting parts add to a career whose best-known performance remains Corrine, while showing that her work has not been confined to a single series or production format.
S.W.A.T. subsequently brought Ryan back to a recurring television role as Dr. Wendy Hughes. TVmaze's appearance record spans episodes from December 2017 through April 2025, documenting a return to the character over several seasons. That chronology shows the distance between this work and The Shield's original run. The gallery here stays focused on the clearly documented 2006 Peabody occasion: a close portrait and a separate stage photograph, each with its own original source. Together they preserve a moment in Ryan's career without presenting different crops of one exposure as separate events or suggesting that ceremony photographs are scenes from her productions.
