Camryn Manheim is an American actress whose work spans theater, television, films and autobiographical writing. Her performance as attorney Ellenor Frutt in The Practice brought major awards and a sustained place in a prominent television ensemble. Later audiences encountered her as Delia Banks in Ghost Whisperer and Lieutenant Kate Dixon in Law & Order. These credits offer several entrances into her career, but the stage work that preceded them is equally important to understanding an artist who has also created material for herself.
Manheim trained as an actor and earned a master's degree from New York University. Her early professional life included extensive off-Broadway work. She received an Obie for Craig Lucas's Missing Persons and developed the solo show Wake Up, I'm Fat!, performed at the Public Theater. The book of the same title extended that autobiographical work into another medium. Theater and writing allowed her to shape an entire evening or narrative, a different responsibility from contributing a character to a television ensemble.
The Practice began in 1997 and became the most prominent early television platform for Manheim. As Ellenor Frutt, she played a defense attorney within the legal drama's continuing cast. The Television Academy records her supporting-actress win in 1998 and a further nomination for the same character in 1999. Those dates distinguish the award itself from the longer run of the series. Returning to the show offers a way to see the performance develop across cases and relationships, rather than judging it only through an awards clip.
Manheim's television characters extend beyond that lawyer. She portrayed Gladys Presley in the 2005 miniseries Elvis, receiving another Emmy nomination, this time in the miniseries or movie category. Ghost Whisperer gave her the continuing role of Delia Banks, while Person of Interest used her as Control. These are separate productions and characters, each requiring a different relationship to the surrounding story. The variation is a useful reminder that recognition for one long-running part can coexist with a much wider body of television work.
Her later police roles included Lieutenant Cosgrove in Stumptown and Kate Dixon in Law & Order. She played Dixon during the revived series' 2022–2024 seasons. Her filmography also includes Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, Happiness, The Laramie Project and An Unfinished Life. These credits place her in comedy, independent drama and ensemble storytelling alongside her network television career. They provide further viewing choices for audiences who first know her through a single weekly series and want to explore the range of productions she has joined.
American Sign Language has been an important part of Manheim's life and professional work. She worked as an interpreter before becoming widely known as an actress and discussed that experience in an ABILITY interview. She later made her Broadway debut in Deaf West's production of Spring Awakening. Her public work has also included disability advocacy. These activities connect language, access and performance in concrete ways; they are part of her artistic history alongside the more familiar record of television appearances and awards.
A viewing path through Manheim's work can move from The Practice to Elvis, then to Ghost Whisperer or Law & Order to compare the demands of a miniseries with those of continuing television. Her solo work and published writing add another perspective, giving space to her own voice beyond a scripted character. The photographs below document two public appearances: the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2008 Heart Truth fashion show. They show Manheim herself and are not presented as stills from any of those productions.
Two distinct public appearances show Manheim at a film festival and a fashion event. These photographs depict the actress, not her screen characters.
