Bob West is an American voice actor and graphic designer best known as the original voice of Barney the Dinosaur. His performance began with Barney & the Backyard Gang home videos and continued into the PBS series Barney & Friends. He also voiced Jasper and Pasqually for Chuck E. Cheese's animatronic entertainment. West's career includes commercial recording and visual design for film and television, making his work broader than the familiar purple character whose voice introduced him to generations of children.
West's official biography dates the beginning of his voice-over career to 1979, following college study in art. He developed a demo recording and gradually built enough work to leave his other employment. Commercial comedy dialogue, television voice-overs and educational narration formed part of that early practice. His own account describes a working life built through recording assignments rather than a single immediate breakthrough. The combination of an art background and a developing voice career also anticipates his later movement between sound performance and graphic design.
An audition in 1988 led to West becoming Barney's voice. The home-video project preceded Barney & Friends, which began airing in 1992. His credits include the 1998 feature Barney's Great Adventure, as well as recordings for toys, music and live presentations. The character's voice and physical performance were separate jobs, so West's voice credit should not be confused with an assertion that he performed every appearance inside the costume. That distinction matters when looking back at a character whose on-screen presence was created through collaboration.
West's Barney recordings also reached audiences outside the original television episodes. Career records list talk-show appearances, radio performances and the Universal Studios Florida attraction A Day in the Park with Barney. In some later productions, previously recorded audio continued to be used after his regular work on the series had ended. The dates of an attraction's operation therefore do not by themselves establish fresh recording sessions throughout that period. His film, television, live-event and archived-audio credits represent related but different forms of participation in the character's history.
In a 2022 anniversary interview with CTV News, West discussed meeting adults who had watched Barney as children. He connected their enthusiasm with memories of reassurance and familiarity, especially during unsettled times. He also described the character's emphasis on inclusion, tolerance and acceptance. The interview captures a later phase of his public career, in which convention conversations allowed him to hear directly from the audience that had once known only the voice. It does not turn those recollections into measurements of educational outcomes or claims about every viewer's experience.
West has also worked as a writer, creative director, producer and director of commercials. His official biography identifies graphic-design work connected with films including Jurassic Park III, Be Cool, Black Dynamite and Chef, alongside television productions such as Angel, Chuck, Speechless and Single Parents. Those are behind-the-scenes design credits, not additional acting roles. Keeping them distinct makes the breadth of his career easier to understand: his contribution may be a character's spoken performance in one project and part of a production's visual world in another.
The gallery shows West speaking at three separate convention occasions. A Super Festivals photograph records GalaxyCon Raleigh in 2019. John Manard's image documents GalaxyCon Columbus in December 2025, while Richard White's photograph comes from GalaxyCon Raleigh in July 2025. All three show the performer himself with a microphone, rather than presenting copyrighted television frames as licensed portraits. Their individual dates and creators distinguish separate appearances even though West wears similar colors. The Creative Commons attribution and share-alike requirements are retained with each image.
