Intro

Bob Hastings was an American actor whose career crossed radio, live-action television and animation. Born in Brooklyn on April 18, 1925, he became familiar to one generation as Lieutenant Elroy Carpenter in McHale’s Navy and to another as the voice of Commissioner Gordon in Batman: The Animated Series. Earlier audiences knew him as Archie Andrews on radio. Those three associations offer a useful introduction because they reveal different kinds of performance: youthful radio comedy, an on-camera supporting character and the measured voice of an animated authority figure.

Career snapshot

Radio was central to his early career. After wartime military service, Hastings played Archie Andrews during the program’s NBC years, from 1945 to 1953. The 1946 publicity portrait in this gallery belongs to that period. A radio character had to be recognizable through speech, timing and relationships with other voices, without the visual assistance available to a television actor. That background helps explain the continuity between his early work and later animation, even though Archie’s teenage world was very different from the stories surrounding Commissioner Gordon.

The entry point

McHale’s Navy supplied his best-known regular live-action role. As Carpenter, Hastings worked within the military comedy’s ensemble during its 1962–1966 run. The character’s place in the chain of command gives viewers a way to follow his performance: watch how he responds to authority and to the less orderly behavior around him. The 1964 ABC publicity photograph identifies him in this role. It is separate from both the earlier radio portrait and the later personal photograph, allowing the gallery to mark a genuine change in professional context.

Screen identity and style

His television work was broader than that one sitcom. Hastings appeared in a range of comedies, dramas and daytime television, including General Hospital, where he played Bert Ramsey. He also worked in films, with The Poseidon Adventure among his credits. These appearances belong to the career of a supporting actor who moved among established productions rather than remaining tied to one series throughout his life. A selected credit list can only indicate that range; individual episodes and films provide the better opportunity to see how each assignment used him.

Collaborations and patterns

Animation returned attention to his voice. He played Superboy in the 1960s and later became strongly associated with Commissioner Gordon in the Batman animated productions. The contrast with Archie is especially instructive: a recognizable performer could supply characters of very different ages and temperaments without depending on his own appearance. Writer Mark Evanier’s remembrance emphasizes how Hastings’s radio experience carried into commercial and cartoon work. That account is valuable as a colleague’s perspective on the working performer, rather than simply another list of titles.

Era reflection

Hastings also remained connected to the history of radio through fan gatherings and performance re-creations. Evanier recalled his participation in conventions and his work greeting audiences on the Universal Studios tour. Those activities place his later public appearances in context: they were opportunities to share a long working life with people who knew different parts of it. The later portrait reproduced here carries an archive upload date of October 2008; the photograph’s exact capture date is not established, and it is not presented as a scene from any production.

Legacy and rediscovery

Hastings died on June 30, 2014, at 89. His career offers an unusually clear route across changes in entertainment media without requiring viewers to treat those media as unrelated worlds. Begin with Carpenter on McHale’s Navy, listen to an Archie Andrews broadcast, and then compare Gordon in Batman: The Animated Series. Each choice directs attention to timing and characterization, while the photographs preserve the actor behind the voices. Together they show how a working performer could remain familiar even when audiences recognized different names, faces or characters first.
