Betty Garrett was an American actress, singer, dancer and comedian whose career moved between Broadway, MGM musicals and television comedy. Film audiences remember her in On the Town and Take Me Out to the Ball Game, while television viewers knew Irene Lorenzo in All in the Family and Edna Babish in Laverne & Shirley. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1919, she worked across several generations of entertainment. The combination of musical performance and comic acting remained central even as the settings and formats changed around her.
Garrett trained at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse and studied dance with Martha Graham. Her Television Academy oral history places an early stage appearance in the Mercury Theatre production of Danton's Death in 1938. She went on to Broadway work including Something for the Boys with Ethel Merman and Laffing Room Only with Olsen and Johnson. This background brought together movement, singing and acting before her film career developed. The oral-history interview, conducted by Karen Herman in 2003, preserves Garrett's own recollections of those years and the people with whom she worked.
At MGM, Garrett appeared in Big City and Words and Music before the busy group of musicals that included On the Town, Take Me Out to the Ball Game and Neptune's Daughter. In On the Town she played Hildy, the taxi driver whose pursuit of Frank Sinatra's sailor contributes to the film's comic energy. These roles drew on the confident musical-comedy performance she had developed on stage. They also placed her within ensembles featuring performers such as Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Red Skelton and Esther Williams rather than in an isolated star vehicle.
The Hollywood blacklist interrupted Garrett's screen opportunities after her husband, Larry Parks, was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. The Television Academy retrospective describes how the couple continued working through a touring musical act when film employment diminished. Garrett later appeared with Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon in the 1955 musical My Sister Eileen. Her career therefore contains a substantial interruption followed by work in other venues, rather than an uninterrupted sequence of studio roles. That historical context helps explain the movement between film, touring performance and television.
All in the Family gave Garrett a prominent television role as Irene Lorenzo, a neighbor whose independence challenged Archie Bunker's assumptions. Laverne & Shirley subsequently made her familiar as Edna, the landlady who became part of the central family. Her oral history discusses both roles and later guest appearances on Murder, She Wrote, The Golden Girls and Becker. The latter brought a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2003. These credits reflect a long working life in comedy, with different characters and relationships rather than a single persona repeated under different program titles.
Broadway remained part of Garrett's career well after her MGM period. Production records place her in Spoon River Anthology in 1963, The Supporting Cast in 1981, and Meet Me in St. Louis in 1989. She played Hattie Walker in the 2001 revival of Follies. The Broadway database also distinguishes her replacement engagement as Ella Peterson in Bells Are Ringing from an original-cast credit. Those distinctions preserve the actual production history and show how she continued to move between new work, revivals and established shows across several decades.
The gallery pairs two archival photographs from different periods. Bob Beerman's portrait was published in Modern Screen in February 1950; the surviving crop isolates Garrett from a photograph with Larry Parks. ABC Television's December 1976 publicity image shows her during Laverne & Shirley and is cropped from its ensemble photograph. The latter survives at modest resolution, which is retained rather than presented as newly recovered detail. Both source records specify United States public-domain grounds and preserve the original creator information. Garrett died in Los Angeles in February 2011, leaving a career documented in performance, production records and oral history.
Two distinct archival photographs, with creator, publication and United States public-domain records.
