Ben Alexander brought a long history in films and broadcasting to Frank Smith, the police partner he played opposite Jack Webb's Joe Friday in Dragnet. His career began in silent pictures and later included radio announcing and another television police series, Felony Squad. Those changing settings give his work a wider range than the familiar badge alone suggests. The gallery follows that span through a child-actor portrait, a 1959 publicity portrait and a later ensemble photograph with his Felony Squad colleagues.
Alexander's early screen work included D. W. Griffith's Hearts of the World, released in 1918. The American Film Institute identifies his character as the littlest brother, alongside Robert Harron's Douglas Gordon Hamilton and Lillian Gish's Marie Stephenson. The film places a village romance and family life against the destruction of the First World War. That credit belongs to Alexander's childhood career, well before his radio and television work. The separate 1924 portrait preserved in the J. Willis Sayre collection records him during that early period rather than illustrating a specific scene from Griffith's film.
In the 1930 All Quiet on the Western Front, Alexander played Kemmerich in an ensemble led by Lew Ayres and Louis Wolheim. Directed by Lewis Milestone, the film returned him to a wartime story in a very different phase of his career. Kemmerich's devastating injury and hospital ordeal make the character part of the film's account of young soldiers confronting the physical cost of war. The role provides an important point of comparison with the reassuring adult authority of his later television appearances: Alexander's screen history also includes vulnerable characters far removed from police routine.
Radio became another substantial part of Alexander's working life. His announcing work included The Martin and Lewis Show, and Dragnet itself connected radio performance with television. In 1952 Webb selected him for the newly created role of Frank Smith after the death of Barton Yarborough, who had played Ben Romero. Smith was therefore a distinct character, not simply Romero under another name. Alexander's partnership with Webb offered a continuing human presence within the investigations, and it became the association through which many television viewers came to recognize him.
The Television Academy records two Emmy nominations for Alexander's work on Dragnet: Best Series Supporting Actor in 1954 and Best Supporting Actor in a Regular Series in 1955. Both are nominations rather than wins. Their placement in supporting categories describes the partnership at the center of his television reputation. Webb's Friday remained the principal figure, while Alexander supplied the recurring colleague with whom that figure worked. The 1959 ABC portrait in this gallery is a publicity image of the actor himself, not a photograph of an identified Dragnet episode or costume.
Alexander returned to a police-series ensemble as Sergeant Dan Briggs in Felony Squad, which began in 1966. Here he worked with Howard Duff as Detective Sergeant Sam Stone and Dennis Cole as Detective Jim Briggs. The Paley Center's record of the January 15, 1969 finale identifies Dan as the desk sergeant and preserves the distinction between the two Briggs characters. The 1968 publicity photograph makes the cast relationship visible: Cole stands at left, Duff in the center and Alexander at right. It belongs to Felony Squad, not to his earlier collaboration with Webb.
Alexander's career can be rediscovered through these separate forms of ensemble work: a child within Griffith's village story, a wounded soldier in Milestone's film and a recurring officer alongside television colleagues. His Hollywood Walk of Fame television entry records a ceremony date of February 8, 1960. That recognition sits within a career already extending across several media. The three independently sourced photographs retain their own dates and contexts, allowing the youthful performer and the mature television actor to be seen together without treating one publicity image as evidence for an unrelated production.
