Anson Williams is an American actor, singer and director best known on screen as Warren 'Potsie' Weber in Happy Days. The friendly member of Richie Cunningham's circle remained part of the series through its long network run. Williams later built a substantial career directing television, including dramas, comedies and science fiction. Viewers who know his face from the sitcom may therefore also have encountered his work in episodes of Star Trek or The Secret Life of the American Teenager without seeing him on screen.
Williams described a complicated route to Happy Days in his 2010 Smashing Interviews conversation. He first won the role for a pilot that did not become a series, then had to audition again when the project returned. The eventual show ran from 1974 to 1984. Potsie shared its youthful social world with Ron Howard's Richie, Don Most's Ralph and Henry Winkler's Fonzie, while the Cunningham household gave their adventures a continuing family setting. The character's singing added another dimension to Williams's contribution.
In a later interview about his memoir, Williams recalled asking Garry Marshall for a chance to introduce music into the series. Marshall agreed to an unusual comic test: singing to a bulldog. Williams performed All Shook Up, and the incident eventually supplied the title of his book. His account connects the joke to a serious professional ambition. Singing was something he wanted to develop alongside acting, and the established program offered a place where that ambition could become part of the comedy.
Williams told Smashing Interviews that Ron Howard encouraged his move into directing. He had already been developing projects as a writer and producer, and he used that work to create opportunities to direct. His television credits include Melrose Place, Beverly Hills, 90210, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Those assignments required him to enter established productions with their own actors and styles, extending his experience of a continuing television ensemble into responsibility for individual episodes.
His Star Trek work included four Voyager episodes and two for Deep Space Nine. In a 2017 conversation with the franchise's official site, he explained that Jeri Taylor had seen his effects-heavy work on seaQuest before hiring him. He discussed Real Life as a directing challenge because the Doctor's imagined family changes tone over the story. He also remembered It's Only a Paper Moon as an opportunity to bring his musical experience to the staging and atmosphere of Vic Fontaine's world.
The memoir Singing to a Bulldog, published in 2014, places an earlier mentor at the center of his story. As the publisher's description explains, Williams worked as an assistant janitor when he was young, and his supervisor Willie became an important source of encouragement. The book follows those lessons into his entertainment career. It gives the familiar television face a different context: the formative relationship is with a person outside show business, and the later success is considered through what that relationship taught him.
The two gallery photographs mark widely separated moments. ABC's December 1973 publicity portrait presents Williams as Potsie before the series premiere; Bob Bekian's 2011 photograph records a later interview appearance. They are separate source photographs, with the later image cropped from a wider composition. For viewers tracing the career, Happy Days provides the acting and singing starting point, while the directing credits open a route into other television worlds. His interviews and memoir explain how he moved between those responsibilities over time.
