Annette O'Toole is an American actress and songwriter with a career across film, television and theatre. Two of her best-known roles belong to the Superman world but are different characters: Lana Lang in Superman III and Martha Kent in Smallville. Other viewers know her as the adult Beverly Marsh in the 1990 television adaptation of It or as Hope McCrea in Virgin River. Her work also includes musical performance and an Academy Award-nominated songwriting collaboration with Michael McKean, giving her career a substantial dimension beyond screen acting.
Born in Houston in 1952, O'Toole began working as a young performer. Her film credits developed through projects including Smile, One on One, Cat People and 48 Hrs. In Superman III, released in 1983, she played Lana Lang opposite Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent. She later starred with Martin Short in Cross My Heart. These films placed her in comedy, romance, action and horror settings, rather than one continuous kind of role. The range helps explain why later television audiences might recognise her without necessarily connecting all of those earlier performances.
Television gave O'Toole several sustained and prominent roles. She played Rose Kennedy in The Kennedys of Massachusetts, receiving a 1990 Emmy nomination for lead actress in a miniseries or special. In the same year, she portrayed the grown-up Beverly Marsh in It. That is the earlier television version of Stephen King's story, distinct from the later cinema adaptations. Other work included Lisa Bridges in Nash Bridges. Her characters moved between historical drama, suspense and contemporary series television, with each production requiring a different relationship to its ensemble and central story.
Smallville brought her back to a familiar fictional universe in 2001, this time as Martha Kent, Clark's adoptive mother. Lana Lang and Martha are separate roles in separate productions; the connection is the actress's return to Superman-related storytelling. In Virgin River, beginning in 2019, O'Toole played Hope McCrea. Netflix's cast guide identifies Hope as the town's mayor and connects her with Doc, played by Tim Matheson. The programme's community setting gives the older characters their own relationships and responsibilities alongside the central romance, providing another continuing part in her television career.
O'Toole and Michael McKean co-wrote A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow for Christopher Guest's A Mighty Wind. The Academy records their joint nomination for original song at the 2004 ceremony. In a contemporary interview, the pair described their songwriting beginning during a long drive, when O'Toole had a melody in her head and they developed it together. They contributed three songs to the film. That account presents the music as an active creative partnership, rather than an incidental extension of their acting work, and the nomination recognises both writers.
Her theatre work includes Robert Eads in the musical Southern Comfort at the Public Theater in 2016. The performance won the Lucille Lortel award for lead actress in a musical and received a Drama Desk nomination. Other stage credits include Hamlet in Bed, Man from Nebraska and The Show-Off. These productions sit alongside the television work rather than replacing it. Singing on stage, creating a character over the length of a play and appearing in a continuing series are different working forms, all represented in O'Toole's recorded credits.
The gallery pairs a licensed Showtime image from Kidding with a separate musical appearance alongside McKean on Catie Lazarus's Employee of the Month. The former shows O'Toole as Louise in the 2020 series; the latter comes from a performance recorded at Joe's Pub in February 2016 and released in March. Their captions distinguish a fictional role from a live musical performance. Together they offer a concise visual companion to a career in which acting, singing and songwriting repeatedly meet, while keeping each image's production context and credit visible.
Two distinct licensed images: a 2020 Kidding scene and a 2016 musical performance with Michael McKean.
