Amber Riley is an American actress and singer known for Mercedes Jones in Glee and Effie White in the London production of Dreamgirls. Her work spans television drama and comedy, musical theatre, concert performance and recording. She won the 2017 Olivier Award for best actress in a musical for Dreamgirls, and later played Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors at Pasadena Playhouse. These roles draw on a powerful singing voice while making different demands on character, humor and the relationship between a performer and a live audience.
Glee introduced Riley to a broad audience as Mercedes, a member of the show's high-school singing ensemble. She played the character during the series' 2009–2015 run and participated in its concert activity. Music was part of the character's dramatic identity, not simply an interlude outside the story. In a later conversation on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Riley connected Mercedes with Effie through their struggle for recognition within a group. That was Riley's own retrospective comparison, offering a link between the television role and the stage assignment that followed.
For Dreamgirls, Riley wanted to demonstrate the acting behind the singing. In a 2017 Broadway.com interview, she recalled being asked to perform substantial dialogue in the audition because Effie's story needed that dramatic foundation. She also described learning from alternate Effies Marisha Wallace and Karen Mav: seeing their versions helped her recognize different choices in timing and staging. Her preparation included vocal exercises, rest and physical conditioning. The interview presents the London engagement as sustained daily work, with each audience encountering the story afresh rather than hearing a repetition of a recorded performance.
The official Olivier record identifies Riley as the 2017 musical-actress winner for Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre. Her next major stage character was very different: Audrey II, the carnivorous plant in Pasadena Playhouse's 2019 Little Shop of Horrors. George Salazar played Seymour and Mj Rodriguez played Audrey, while Mike Donahue directed. Keeping Audrey and Audrey II distinct is essential to understanding this cast. Riley supplied the plant's musical personality, taking a role traditionally associated with a male voice and approaching it as a character she could make her own.
Discussing Little Shop with BroadwayWorld, Riley said she was offered Audrey II from the outset and welcomed the challenge. She described the plant as confident and clever, recognizing the comedy in its destructive appetite. Looking back at Dreamgirls in the same interview, she considered its repeated stage performances more demanding than the already busy musical schedule on Glee. Warm-ups, hydration and adequate rest remained part of her routine. The account distinguishes the requirements of two productions without reducing either role to the ability to deliver one spectacular song.
Riley also won Dancing with the Stars in 2013 with Derek Hough; ABC's contemporary report identifies that competition as season 17. In 2015, she played Addaperle in The Wiz Live!, and in 2022 she won the eighth season of The Masked Singer as Harp. Her recording work includes the six-song RILEY project released in October 2020. These appearances extend beyond scripted character acting, showing her performing under different formats and, in the case of the masked competition, without her familiar face immediately identifying the singer for the audience.
The gallery preserves three distinct moments from the Glee period. A photograph by istolethetv records a December 2009 Bryant Park appearance connected with Toys for Tots. Gage Skidmore's portrait was made at the July 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, and vagueonthehow's June 2011 concert image shows Riley performing as Mercedes. The stage photograph is not labeled as Dreamgirls or Little Shop, which belong to later work. Each image retains its own date, photographer and license information so that public appearances and fictional performance can be understood separately.
