Alexandra Paul is closely associated with Lieutenant Stephanie Holden in Baywatch, a role that placed her within one of television's most internationally recognisable lifeguard ensembles. Her career had already included several substantial films before she joined the beach drama. Horror, sports drama, police comedy and television thrillers all appear in her credits. Alongside that screen work, she has pursued documentary production, environmental advocacy and endurance swimming, activities that give her public career a broader shape than a single long-running character can convey.
Paul was born in New York City in 1963 and grew up in Cornwall, Connecticut. Her identical twin, Caroline Paul, became a writer and firefighter; the two have separate professional histories. Alexandra attended the Groton School and was accepted at Stanford, but chose acting instead of university. Modelling work in New York preceded her move into screen performance. The television film Paper Dolls, released in 1982, was an early prominent assignment, putting her into a story about the modelling business while she was still at the beginning of her acting career.
John Carpenter's Christine followed in 1983, adapting Stephen King's novel about a dangerously possessive automobile. Paul plays Leigh, alongside Keith Gordon as Arnie and John Stockwell as Dennis. As Arnie becomes increasingly absorbed by his restored Plymouth, the people close to him struggle to reach him. Paul's role places her within that human conflict rather than making her the title character: Christine is the car. The film's combination of teenage relationships and supernatural menace remains a distinctive early entry in her screen work.
Her subsequent films included Just the Way You Are, American Flyers with Kevin Costner and 8 Million Ways to Die with Jeff Bridges. Dragnet in 1987 shifted to comic adventure, with Paul as Connie Swail. Directed by Tom Mankiewicz, it paired Dan Aykroyd's rigidly procedural Joe Friday with Tom Hanks's less conventional Pep Streebek. The film reworked a familiar police property as a comedy while retaining connections to its earlier television identity. For Paul, it offered a different ensemble and tone from both Christine's horror and American Flyers' sporting drama.
Baywatch brought Paul a sustained television role during the 1990s. Stephanie Holden was a lieutenant within the lifeguard organisation, and Paul played her across five seasons. Her official account of leaving the series describes a decision to pursue other television and film projects after that extended run. Swimming was also a real part of her life beyond the series. In August 2009 she completed an eighteen-kilometre solo ocean swim in Fiji in six hours and fifty-six minutes, connecting an enduring personal pursuit with the water-based setting audiences knew from her acting.
Television and independent film continued to supply varied work. Death Train and Nightwatch paired her with Pierce Brosnan, while later credits included a recurring part in Melrose Place and a guest appearance in Mad Men. She also worked in non-fiction television, hosting Winning Women and Earth Talk Today. Her documentary projects included Jampacked and The Cost of Cool: Finding Happiness in a Materialistic World, which she co-wrote and co-produced. Those projects let her participate in shaping the subject matter as well as appearing before a camera.
More recent screen work includes Tethered and Baby Steps, the latter following the earlier film Say Yes. Paul also co-hosted the Switch4Good podcast from 2019 to 2025, extending her public work into conversations about plant-based living. Her filmography is therefore best understood as several continuing strands rather than a career ending when Stephanie left Baywatch. The gallery brings together a 2006 Sundance appearance, a 2008 event with Jaason Simmons and a 2012 pet-adoption photograph. Each is a separate public record with its own photographer, date and licence, rather than a still from a fictional production.
Three distinct public appearances, with the full group context retained and individual source credits.
